Drying tables at Njuriga
When I visited Njuriga Farmers' Cooperative Society in 2016, I was greeted by its Chairman, Wilfred Kimodo, its 9-member managing board, and a large bowl of boiled eggs and potatoes. I admit, after several days of questionable meals across rural Tanzania and Kenya, I was most immediately focused on the food. With a full belly, I soon learned what made Njuriga truly special. With women occupying half of its management roles, the board reflected equal representation of its 470 members. Moreover, in conversation and in action, Njuriga embodied its mission statement: 'To produce high quality and quantity of specialty coffee, addressing the members welfare through sustainable practices. Core values: transparency, unity, cooperation, respect, efficiency, honesty."
