On the southern slope of Mount Kenya, the sprawling cooperative in Kamwangi sits among the lush vegetation growing from base to peak. This region, in Kirinyaga, consistently releases coffees that are some of the most sought-after in the world; much of this coffee’s quality is due to the verdant soil of the extinct volcano, Mount Kenya. The coffee here comes from several small-holder farms that are meticulously sorted and processed in the Kamwangi mill. The cooperative isn’t only passionate about coffee, as the members are also a tight-knit community, sharing resources like funds for emergencies, school fees, and other expenses. The cooperative is also a proponent of sustainability within the region, which has far-reaching impact for future cooperatives and the region as a whole.
