Burundi's Muyinga Province is lesser-known for its coffee production than the western provinces of Kayanza or Ngozi, but because of fertile soil from surrounding volcanoes, the mild climate, and high elevation, this area boasts very high-scoring coffees. Most, if not all coffees from Burundi are micro-lots; because these farms are so small, it often takes several farms to make up enough cherries to sell as a single lot, essentially making it impossible to source coffees from a single farm or producer. Due to this, the names of the lots are sold under the name of the washing station. Meticulous sorting, fermenting, and washing practices are paramount to achieve uniformity among the many different farms and producers.
